“We’re here, we’re queer and we’d like to say hello!”
It is a win for the LGBTQ Community yet again.
Additional Advocate General has mentioned to Justice N. A. Venkatesh that a special glossary was to be published in the State Gazette on the 20th of this month.
The Gazette published by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Women Empowerment and Social Welfare was done while executing orders of the High Court Of Madras. The Gazette contains a list of appropriate ways to address the third gender.
This step taken by the Tamil Nadu Government comes 4 years after the Supreme Court repealed Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalized gay sex. The decision was happily welcomed by the Indian LGBTQ community.
A copy of the Gazette is furnished to Judge Venkatesh. The terms that are to be used to address the third gender have been mentioned in the State Gazette. These designated terms are to be referred to when addressing people of the third gender in any government notification passed later.
The media and all organizations operating under the government have been instructed to follow the Gazette and use only the terms mentioned in it to refer to the LGBTQ Community.
